November 8, 2006 The Harbor District has listed their 6.19 acre Burnham Strip parcel for sale. A buyer could develop the property with any of the uses allowed in the still-current COSC zoning. (This parcel runs along Obispo from Coronado almost all the the way up to Avenue Alhambra.) A previous development proposal for this parcel included a shopping mall with a building right at the foot of Avenue Portola, blocking the fantastic public ocean view from the town center (post office area, etc.)

This land is now at great risk for development, and must be acquired as the major part of our public ocean-view park.

October 17, 2006 As part of the Local Coastal Program (LCP) Update, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted to remove housing from the list of allowed uses on the Burnham Strip. Certification by the California Coastal Commission could take up to one year, and the County will “grandfather” the two existing applications which are currently pending. Even under the pending rezoning to "EG" (El Granada Gateway), this land could still be developed with various non-park uses, so we still need to acquire the land in order to make it into a public park.
